Erasmus Mundus

NEW: 2012 CALL FOR PROPOSALS

NEW: Information about Erasmus Mundus Doctoral Fellowships

Why Erasmus Mundus?

The creation of Erasmus Mundus came from a strong desire to open European universities to the rest of the world and to give non-European students the opportunity to come and study in the EU. The whole initiative was based on the success of the Erasmus programme that has been allowing European students to study all around Europe for more than 20 years now.

Erasmus, whose name was given to the programme, was a Dutch scholar and humanist that lived in the 15th and 16th century. He travelled and studied all around Europe and was in touch with most of the European intellectuals of the time.

What is Erasmus Mundus?

Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aims to enhance the quality of European higher education. It also promotes dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with non-European countries.

The Erasmus Mundus 2009-2013 programme provides support to:

  • higher education institutions that wish to implement joint programmes at postgraduate level (Action 1) or to set-up inter-institutional cooperation partnerships between universities from Europe and targeted non European-Countries (Action 2);
  • individual students, researchers and university staff who wish to spend a study / research / teaching period in the context of one of the above mentioned joint programmes or cooperation partnerships;
  • any organisation active in the field of higher education that wishes to develop projects aiming at enhancing the attractiveness, profile, visibility and image of European higher education worldwide (Action 3).

TESTIMONIALS FROM JAPANESE EM ALUMNI

Sample testimonials and success stories among the increasing number of Japanese participants:

Mr Masaki NAGAI, Germany, Sweden, Finland, 2006-2008

For two years starting in 2006, I participated in the Erasmus Mundus Masters' programme "Space Master" and studied space engineering in three countries: Germany, Sweden, and Finland. During the programme, I not only acquired knowledge and skills, but was able to experience the lifestyle and culture in several countries, and moreover, develop relations with friends from all over the world. Thanks to this programme, I gained some valuable experience in multicultural exchange and international understanding. After returning to Japan, I have been working for a satellite equipment manufacturer in Tokyo, and am participating in a joint Japan-Europe Mercury exploration project. I still maintain relations with Europe, which I am very proud of. In future, I hope to make a contribution to Japan-Europe cooperation not only with regard to space science, but in various fields including political, economic, and academic fields.

Mr. Tsuyoshi MORIMOTO, 2005

What did you like most?

The best thing about the programme was that I was able to study for two years alongside colleagues with different cultural backgrounds and ways of thinking, from all over the world.

Would you recommend Erasmus Mundus to other students? And why?

Yes, I would very much recommend the programme to other students because by experiencing language and cultural barriers, which is something we cannot do in Japan, we will be able to look at the world from an entirely new angle. The generous scholarship is another reason for recommending the programme.

If it becomes widely known that there are programmes in Europe like Erasmus Mundus master courses given in English, I think the number of applicants will increase.

Participation in such consortiums can help to raise the international profile of non-European universities, and also provide opportunities to welcome students from Europe to your institutions.

When to apply
The deadline for courses starting in autumn 2013 is April 30th 2012
