EU Associations were first established in Japan in 1987 with the main objective of promoting and deepening mutual understanding between the European Union and Japan as well as to strengthen the bilateral relationship. With the establishment of the Ishikawa EU Association in April 2008, the associations now number twelve, all with both private and corporate members. The associations assist in carrying out activities such as:
- Organising Conferences, Seminars and Cultural Events related to the EU
- Organising visits to and from Europe
- Distribution of newsletters, etc.
