2006/05/08

EU NEWS 38/2006

8 May 2006

The European institutions’ web sites (the European Commission, Council, Parliament, etc.) will use the “.eu” top level domain from 9 May 2006 which is celebrated as "Europe Day".

The website for the Commission's Delegation to Japan will be changed from http://jpn.ec.europa.eu/ to http://www.deljpn.ec.europa.eu .  Please note that the old address can be used for at least another year.

"EUROPA.eu" will become the single Internet “brand” of, and the single online entry point to, all the EU institutions and agencies. The European Commission's website will become http://ec.europa.eu.

European Commission email addresses with the format firstname.lastname@ec.europa.eu will become firstname.lastname@ec.europa.eu.

The institutions' current “.eu.int” addresses can be used for a transitional period of at least one year.

Background:
The creation of" .eu" was decided at the Lisbon Council in 2000 to stress the importance that Europe gives to the Information Society and to electronic commerce in order to enhance Europe’s competitiveness. The new “.eu” internet domain became available for EU citizens on 7 April 2006 and has proven immensely popular, with over one million URLs registered to date.
